Cobra Energy Obtains Azito’s combined cycle power plant extension in Ivory coast

The existing combined cycle power plant is located in the Youpougon neighborhood, in the economic capital of the country, Abidjan. With this new extension, the plant will increase the power installed with 280 MW.

The EPC contract has started with the signature of the limited notice to proceed (LNTP), with an expected start of the works in july 2019. It is the first contract with these characteristics in Africa for Cobra and will allow Cobra to extend the possibilities of being awarded with new projects of this type in the region.

Cobra has been present in Ivory Coast since 2013, with the electricity subsidiary at the beginning and with Humiclima nowadays. This Azito project is an important quantitative and qualitative step for Cobra’s presence in Africa.

The client, Azito Energie, operates the Azito power plant since 1999, when the first phase was rolled out. The power installed currently is of 420MW, accounting for 25% of the electric production in Ivory Coast. Azito Energie is owned by Globeleq (77%) and IPS (23%). Globeleq is an important business developer in Africa, being present with several combined cycle power plants  and hydroelectric projects, and working in the development of solar photovoltaic projects as well.
