El proyecto HYSOL se centró en la superación de las limitaciones de la tecnología CSP para aumentar su contribución en el mercado global de la electricidad, hibridando con una turbina de gas para lograr una potencia estable y fiable del 100% independientemente de las circunstancias meteorológicas. La planta HYSOL fue concebida para validar el uso de fuentes de energía 100% renovables (cuando se utiliza combustible de gas derivado de biomasa) para la producción de electricidad firme y despachable; Esta configuración significa la mayor contribución de la energía solar en una planta híbrida hasta la fecha.El resultado del proyecto HYSOL fue una tecnología casi comercial para los ciclos combinados híbridos solares (SHCC). Para lograr este diseño pre-comercial, el consorcio validó el demostrador bajo diferentes modos de operación y la viabilidad del proyecto en diferentes localizaciones. La experiencia ganada tras la operación del demostrador ubicado en Manchasol (España) ha ayudado a optimizar y validar todas las herramientas de simulación (que son la base para futuros trabajos de ingeniería), la lógica del sistema de control y los modos de operación de futuras plantas comerciales.
Cobra, como líder del proyecto, desempeñó la coordinación, integración, ingenieria y contrucción del prototipo así como la O&M del mismo.
