Descripción del Proyecto
The Castor Natural Gas Submarine Storage project, located 22 kilometers off the coast of Vinaròs (Castellón), in Spanish territorial waters in the Mediterranean, was designed to complement the Spanish natural gas energy requirements in the event of shortages or an interruption in imports.
The Project consists of three basic facilities:
Offshore Platforms
A fixed marine platform is deployed over the Amposta geological site. This platform is divided into two sections, the wellhead platform and the process platform, installed on metal jackets piled into the sea bed and linked by a walkway.
The wellhead platform consists of thirteen wells drilled with trajectories coinciding with the highest part of the reservoir and distributed evenly to facilitate natural gas storage, injection and extraction operations.
Eight of the thirteen wells can be used either to inject or extract natural gas from storage, while a further four are used exclusively for continuous monitoring of the movement and pressure of liquids (gas, water) within the reservoir.
The remaining well is that through which any liquids produced (water, traces of oil) at the time of gas extraction can be reinjected into the reservoir.
The process platform, on the other hand, houses the necessary compression equipment for the injection of gas into the reservoir in addition to the treatment facilities for the purification of gas during the extraction process.
Gas pipeline
The process platform is connected to the operations plant, located in the municipality of Vinarós, by means of 30 inch diameter, 30 km gas pipeline, (22 km undersea and 8 km on land).
Ground Operations Plant
The operations plant houses the compression equipment for the injection and treatment of extracted gas. In turn, it is connected to the national gas pipeline network through a dedicated pipeline built by ENAGAS.
